Ausangate Circuit
The Ausangate Circuit is a popular trekking route in the Cordillera Vilcanota mountain range of the Andes in Peru. The trek is named after the Ausangate mountain, which is one of the highest peaks in the region and holds great spiritual significance for the local people.
The circuit is a 70-80km trek that takes about 6-7 days to complete. It typically starts and ends in the town of Tinqui, which is located about 100km southeast of Cusco. The trek involves hiking over several high mountain passes, with altitudes ranging from 4,200m to 5,200m above sea level. Along the way, hikers will pass by turquoise lakes, hot springs, and herds of alpacas and llamas grazing in the high Andean grasslands.
The terrain is rugged and challenging, with steep ascents and descents, rocky trails, and sometimes unstable footing. The weather can be unpredictable, with cold temperatures and occasional snow or rain showers. Hikers should be well-prepared with appropriate gear and clothing for the conditions.
Despite the difficulty, the Ausangate Circuit is a rewarding trek that offers stunning views of the Andean landscapes and the chance to experience traditional Andean culture. Along the way, hikers will encounter small villages where they can interact with locals and learn about their customs and traditions.
